My Must-Have Homemaking Tools (That I Would Actually Use)

I can’t believe it is already March. You know what that means—it’s time for spring cleaning! Or, as I like to call it, the Homemaking Olympics. Spring cleaning can feel like a major event, but with the right tools, you can tackle it like a pro and maybe even enjoy the process. I’m here to make sure you’re ready to take home the Gold with a winning team of homemaking tools! Here are some of my faves:

  1. Multicolor Microfiber Cloths – I am a budget queen who also loves the environment, so using microfiber cloths instead of paper towels for routine cleaning tasks is a no-brainer. If you get the multicolor pack, you can “assign” a different color for different rooms/tasks and avoid contaminating your kitchen with bathroom germs.
  2. Multicolor Rubber Gloves – The floral band on these rubber gloves adds a springy dose of cheer to even the nastiest cleaning tasks. They come in three different colors, so I keep a pair in the kitchen, a pair in the laundry room, and a pair in my bathroom cleaning caddy. Avoid cross-contamination in cleaning while looking cute!
  3. Sal’s Suds Cleaning Concentrate – True story: the first time I used this, I texted my mother-in-law to tell her how great it is. A little bit of this mixed with some distilled water goes a long way! It’s biodegradable, safe to use on many surfaces, and smells a lot like Pine-Sol.
  4. Amber Glass Spray Bottles with Multicolored Silicone Sleeves – Perfect for mixing up your favorite cleaning concentrate! The different color silicone sleeves make it easy to distinguish between your different cleaning solutions. Also, they look cool on the shelf in your linen closet or wherever you keep your cleaning supplies. I have a designated broom closet with shelving for cleaning supplies in my laundry room—vintage house perks.
  5. O-Cedar Pet Pro Broom with Step-On Dustpan – Be honest. How long have you been using your current broom? If you’re like me, chances are the plastic straw is fraying and splitting and full of pet hair you can’t even completely clean out anymore. I currently have a nearly 10-year-old O-Cedar broom that I have just about loved to death, and this new Pet Pro model looks like the perfect replacement!
  6. Retractable Microfiber Duster – There is something downright creepy about looking up at the ceiling fan and noticing it’s caked in half an inch of dust on all sides. This duster makes fixing that problem “smarter, not harder.” It also comes with attachments perfect for dusting your blinds and furniture. As a bonus, you can toss the microfiber cleaning attachments in the washer instead of tossing them in the trash like disposables!
  7. O-Cedar Easy Wring Mop – I currently own a regular rope mop from this brand that I use with a Home Depot contractor bucket to clean my floors, and it’s great. I would LOVE to upgrade to the Easy Wring Mop. Maybe I’ve been influenced by CleanTok, maybe it’s just because it has the word “easy” in the name, but I want one!
  8. Bissell SurfaceSense Allergen Lift-Off Pet Upright Vacuum – At this point, this is now my personal wish list to show my husband. But hear me out! We did have a Bissell Pet Vacuum until my husband used it to clean up popcorn ceiling he scraped during our renovations. Of course, the vacuum couldn’t handle that abuse, so he replaced it with a Ryobi cordless stick vacuum. And let me tell you something right now. Men should never choose vacuums. Case in point: my husband picked one based on the fact that it came with a free leaf blower. Spoiler alert: a leaf blower does not a good vacuum make. My point is that I really want another Bissell. The one we had before was great with three indoor cats.
  9. Birds and Berries Journal – You know who journals? Martha Stewart, the queen of all homemakers. You know what is so helpful as a homemaker? Keeping a general daily record of tasks you completed, meals you made, recipes tried, items purchased, and reviews of said items. You think you’ll remember things, but with a hectic life, it’s so good to write things down and KNOW you’ll remember. Just try it for a month and see. These Peter Pauper Press journals are fairly affordable and very good quality, and the bird print is so right for springtime.
  10. Fresh Wave Odor Eliminator Spray – This stuff is magical. It really works, and it’s human- and pet-safe to boot. Perfect for freshening up a room after scooping the litter box or taking out smelly trash.

With the right tools, homemaking becomes less of a chore and more of a joy. What are your must-have cleaning tools?
